As if on cue, Democrats quickly began pushing gun control after the tragic shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas. However, before Dylan Patrick Kelley murdered innocent men, women, and children last Sunday, there was another mass shooting. Four people were shot with an assault rifle, including a 7-year old girl.
The shooter is, Rolando Martinez–ian illegal immigrant.
Late Saturday evening, Austin police arrested 25-year-old Rolando Martinez. Martinez had been shooting at cars traveling along an 18-mile stretch of Interstate 35. Bullets from his assault rifle struck three adults and a 7-year-old girl. The child is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital.
According to authorities, Martinez began shooting at vehicles around 2 a.m. Saturday morning. Panicked motorists began calling 911, telling operators that someone was shooting at them. 30 minutes after the first call came in, gas station video captured the suspect in action. His shooting spree ended at 3:15 a.m.
Even more troubling, Martinez is in the country illegally. According to KXAN, who spoke with one of Martinez’s sisters, he is the oldest of six siblings. She found his arrest shocking because he is generally “calm and happy.” The family hasn’t had the chance to speak with him and tearing up; she said she’s “not sure what went wrong that night.”
Law enforcement officials picked Martinez up on traffic warrants Saturday evening. When they questioned him about the shooting, he claimed he had been drinking at a local nightclub and “didn’t remember much.” He did, however, remember waking up in a grassy median near the freeway, per the arrest affidavit.
The Sounds of Silence
Interestingly enough, his bond is currently $1 million. Even though, they’re only charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A 2nd-degree felony in the state of Texas. Additionally, jail records indicate that Martinez is under an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.
Unfortunately, the city of Austin doesn’t cooperate with federal immigration laws.
As of February, the Travis County Sheriff’s department has denied 196 ICE detainer requests. As a result, dozens of dangerous illegal immigrants are walking the streets. Martinez could have been one of them. Regardless, he’s in the country illegally because of sanctuary city laws and he managed to get an assault weapon.
So, we have to ask, where are Senators Chris Murphy and Kamala Harris now? Where are the tweets demanding Republicans take action to prevent these horrible tragedies?
