It’s no secret that the VA system is broken. It has been plagued by one scandal after another and our nation’s veterans have been paying the price–again. President Trump has said that “Our veterans have delivered for this nation–and now we must deliver for them.” This latest story shows exactly why he is right.

According to Fox News, Retired Marine Stephen McMenamin and his wife Hannah were waiting in the ER at the Durham VA Medical Center when they noticed two veterans struggling in pain. What happened next is truly despicable. According to McMenamin:

“Both older men were ignored for hours despite complaining of severe pain. They said one practically fell out of his wheelchair, and the other finally lay down on the floor after being denied a place to rest.”
Unfortunately, this has become all too common at VA hospitals around the country. While there are some who provide excellent care to veterans, many do not. And let’s face it, just one veteran suffering is one too many.

Corruption and Abuse
In January, Trump fired two corrupt VA employees amidst allegations of neglect and fraud. In early February. he met with veterans and health care experts in order to devise a plan to create better health care and improve access to benefits.
Trump has said that he hopes to give veterans more and better choices for receiving the care so many of them desperately need. He is working with world renowned hospitals like the Cleveland and Mayo Clinics to offer care in conjunction with the VA.
The facility issued a statement calling the incident “regrettable” and thanked Hannah McMenamin for caring enough to share what happened. The employee involved has been removed from patient care pending an investigation.
