Senator Chuck Schumer is finding himself in unfamiliar territory this week after agreeing to end the government shutdown. Immediately after the announcement of a short-term budget resolution, members of his own party took him to task for “caving” in to Republicans.
Monday afternoon, Democrats ended the shutdown by agreeing to fund the government through February 8. Schumer, along with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, brokered a deal that ensures funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program for the next six years.
While the agreement may not be enough to avoid another shutdown, it is a step in the right direction. But as Schumer is discovering, working for America is not on his colleagues’ agenda.
One of the first to call out the senator was House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. “I don’t see that there’s any reason-I’m speaking personally and hearing from my members-to support what was put forth,” Pelosi said at a press briefing.
Similarly, progressive activists voiced their displeasure with Schumer for giving in to President Trump. “It’s official: Chuck Schumer is the worst negotiator in Washington, even worse than Trump,” said Murshed Zaheed, director of Credo.
Interestingly, in his attacks on Schumer, Zaheed made the purpose of the shutdown painfully apparent. “Any plan to protect Dreamers that relies on the word of serial liars like Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, or Donald Trump is doomed to fail,” he said.
The End Game
So you see, the point of this whole exercise, for Democrats at least, was to push Trump’s buttons. It was the first anniversary of his presidency and they successfully shifted attention away from him. At the same time, they also put their very un-American agenda front and center.
In any case, we’re only calling attention to the Schumer backlash because we feel it highlights a major problem within the Democrat party. Think about it, if these people starred in a Hollywood movie the subject could easily be cannibalism.
The fact is that Democrats eat their own as a matter of survival. And we’re not talking about the survival of the party either. They feed off each other for no other reason than to continue their own dwindling legacies.
This kind of progress only feeds egos.
