This Man Just Introduced A Major Bill Targeting Sanctuary City Officials…
Last week, a California jury acquitted illegal immigrant Jose Zarate in the murder of Kate Steinle. The decision angered Americans and reignited the debate over the dangers of sanctuary cities. This week, Indiana Republican Todd Rokita proposed a solution that many leftists won’t like.
The Republican congressman introduced the most sweeping piece of legislation aimed at sanctuary cities to date. Rokita’s bill takes direct aim at elected officials who protect illegal immigrants like Zarate and Sergio Martinez.
Penalties for refusing to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials would include fines up to $1 million and five years in prison. In a statement, Rokita said Americans are paying the price because lawmakers ignore the law.
“Politicians don’t get to pick and choose what laws to comply with,” Rokita told Fox News. “Americans are dying because politicians sworn to uphold the law refuse to do so.” The “Stopping Lawless Actions of Politicians (SLAP) Act,” he says, will hold politicians responsible.
U.S. courts deported Zarate and Martinez multiple 25 and 20 respectively. In addition, both illegal immigrants were previously convicted on felony charges. Even worse, ICE issued detainer requests that were ignored by San Francisco and Portland law enforcement.
After sanctuary policies set them free, Zarate killed Steinle and Martinez kidnapped and raped two women. An Oregon court sentenced Martinez to 35 years in prison, on Friday. The Department of Justice issued a federal warrant for Zarate that same day, on multiple charges.
All is Fair
Nevertheless, these cases call attention to the larger problem at hand. Which is, sanctuary city policies are destroying the lives of innocent American citizens. Contrary to claims by liberal politicians who support these policies, illegal immigrants have no constitutional rights.
Not to mention, being in the country without proper documentation is a crime in and of itself. Yet, sanctuary politicians and the courts seem to conveniently ignore that detail. In fact, a federal judge recently blocked President Trump from defunding states and cities that defy immigration authorities.
In any case, it stands to reason that America needs a law that punishes elected officials and law enforcement who break the law. If they want to continue allowing dangerous illegals to roam the streets, then they too can answer for the crimes they commit. After all, they say they support fairness and equality, right?
Let’s see if they’re willing to put their money and freedom where their mouth is.
