If there is one thing we have learned about “sanctuary” cities, it’s that they only protect the criminals. Aside from violating federal immigration laws, sanctuary policies put the lives of innocent Americans at risk by exposing them to violent illegal immigrants. Sadly, most citizens aren’t aware their lives are in danger.

A 65-year old Portland woman had no idea that her life would be forever changed by one of these dangerous criminals. But, it was.

Despite being a convicted felon, and being deported more than 20 times, Sergio Jose Martinez was free to walk the streets of Portland. To show his appreciation for the sanctuary Portland lawmakers continued to provide him, he went on another crime spree. Martinez allegedly broke into the homes of two women, robbing and raping them before stealing one of their cars.

According to police, Martinez physically and sexually attacked a 65-year-old woman in the 1700 block of NE Irving Street and then stole her car. As police were investigating that attack, officers responded to the area of Northeast 21st Avenue and Halsey Street Monday night on reports that a man, armed with a knife, had attacked a woman. Martinez’s criminal history dates back to 2003 and he has been jailed in both California and Oregon several times.

At the age of 15, Matinez completed a drug abuse treatment program in Texas. He is a transient, who has admitted to Sheriff’s officials that he uses meth and marijuana but that alcohol use is his biggest problem. In California, Martinez’s conviction record includes burglary, being in U.S. after deportation, parole violation, battery, and theft. His record was just as bad in Oregon. Charges there included possession of meth, multiple instances of escape, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, hit and run, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment.

Martinez was most recently deported in November of 2016. Portland Mayor, Ted Wheeler, has proudly supported the city’s “sanctuary” status, where wanted criminals such as Martinez know they can go to avoid arrest. In addition, Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese recently disciplined one of his deputies for helping ICE on a case, as well as knowingly releasing an illegal alien sex offender back in April.

Martinez is currently being held on charges of two counts of Burglary in the First Degree, two counts of Robbery in the First Degree, Kidnapping in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, two counts of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Burglary in the First Degree, Sodomy in the First Degree, and three counts of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree.
