Great Enemies Now Friendly?

Russia and America were always considered the two biggest enemies in the world. It all started with the crises between the Soviet Union and U.S, but that’s all history now.

Both U.S and Russia have an enemy in common; the terrorist. Obama and the other previous presidents, were not willing to work with Putin to put an end to this, but Trump is.

Both world leaders are willing to put their differences aside, and work together to defeat the terrorists. Putin and Trump had their first phone call on Monday.

Other global leaders were not looking forward to seeing Trump as the new US president, but Putin saw it as an opportunity to work on improving the relationship between the U.S. and Russia.

The Private Phone Call

“During the call, the two leaders discussed a range of issues including the threats and challenges facing the United States and Russia. Strategic economic issues and the historical U.S. — Russian relationship that dates back over 200 years.” – Source.

President-elect Trump noted to President Putin that he is, “Very much looking forward to having a strong and enduring relationship with Russia and the people of Russia.”

Trump’s statement, “We will get along with all other nations willing to get along with us,” went down pretty well in the Kremlin.

According to Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, the two leaders do share a similar outlook on foreign policy.

However, John Bolton, as one of the leading candidates for the position of secretary of state has a different view. He spent the past few years arguing for a tougher U.S. position towards Russia and the expansionism in Syria and Ukraine.

The Common Enemy Number One

Putin’s plan is to move U.S. focus in Syria away from removing President Bashar Assad. His goal is to continue with bombing raids that target ISIS.

“V. Putin and D. Trump shared the opinion that it is necessary to join forces against the common enemy number one — international terrorism and extremism. In this spirit, the question of regulating the conflict in Syria was also discussed,” said the Kremlin statement.

The two presidents agreed to keep in touch by telephone, and start planning for an in-person meeting as well.
