That is how Asra Q. Nomani, 51 would describe herself. She was a long-time liberal, but on election day 2016, she voted for Trump.
Nomani is a former Wall Street Journal reporter and a co-founder of the Muslim Reform Movement. She penned an entry on The Washington Post explaining why she voted for Trump.
She started by introducing herself. “… a 51-year-old, a Muslim, an immigrant woman ‘of color’ — am one of those silent voters for Donald Trump,” she wrote.
She migrated to the United States from India at the age of four during the summer of 1969.
This is to establish that she is not a “bigot,” “racist,” “chauvinist” or “white supremacist,” as Trump voters are being called, nor part of some “whitelash.”
Why She Voted For Trump
She said that one of the reasons she did not vote for Clinton was because she was a single mother who can’t afford health insurance under Obamacare. She said that many ordinary Americans in the rural areas are struggling with the same plight.
Obama’s mortgage-loan modification program “HOPE NOW” has not been helpful to her either, she claimed.
“Obama danced around matters involving Islamic Extremists,” she also wrote.
The e-mail released by WikiLeaks revealed Clinton’s knowledge of Qatar and Saudi Arabia providing support to ISIS was the last straw for Nomani.
This is because the Clinton Foundation received multi-million dollar donations from the same people who funded ISIL, the term Clinton used in the e-mail.
Nomani said she wanted to express her thoughts on Twitter, but the “Pantsuit revolution” has made the people of social media think that people who support Trump are “rednecks.”
No Fear for “Trump America”
Nomani also wrote that a journalist from India asked about her thoughts about being a Muslim in “Trump America.”
She answered that she absolutely have no fears.
“The checks and balances in America and our rich history of social justice and civil rights will never allow the fear-mongering that has been attached to candidate Trump’s rhetoric to come to fruition,” she explained.
She said that she was concerned more of the influence of theocratic Muslim dictatorships in a Hillary Clinton America.
“We have to stand up with moral courage against not just hate against Muslims, but hate by Muslims, so that everyone can live with sukhun, or peace of mind,” she wrote at the end of her e-mail to the journalist.
Threats After Going Public
In an interview, she told that she has received various threats. She added that she has been called traitor for voicing her support to the President-elect.
Nomani also said that fellow Muslims have told her Allah “will send her to the gates of hell.”
Fortunately, she has received thanks from many people also for going public. She said she believes that many Muslims also feel the way she does.
Nomani also acknowledged that Trump can be insensitive, but she knows that the president-elect isn’t Islamophobic.
“He is insensitive at times with what he says and his proposals are tough, but they reflect a reality of concern people have about an issue that’s killing people from Orlando to Paris,” she concluded.
