Donald Trump is taking fire for not defending our stance as the defender of democracy in other nations.
Maybe that’s a good thing.
“If elected president, Donald Trump will give democracy promotion a demotion, and perhaps get rid of it altogether. Trump appears to be ignorant of the benefits the United States enjoys from the spread of democracy abroad, and much less the fact that his often undemocratic campaign for the presidency undercuts Washington’s ability to lead by example. Democracy around the world is in recession,
According to Trump, the United States has its own “mess” to worry about; Washington is not a good “messenger” and has no “right to lecture” other countries.”
The author goes on to say,
“The spread of democracy worldwide enhances
Umm. No. It hasn’t.
And, for the record, we are not a democracy. That’s not what The Founding Fathers gave us. In fact, they considered democracies akin to mob rule. Therefore, the United States of America was birthed as a representative republic.
That’s why people get so confused. They actually think we are a democracy– then when the election rolls around, the pieces don’t seem to fit.
For generations, this was common knowledge. Any schoolboy could tell you that. Is wasn’t until December 29,1940, that America was told she was a democracy.
We’ve believed it ever since.
“We must be the great arsenal of democracy.”
That’s not what James Madison wrote in The Federalist 10.
“Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property, and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.”
John Adams also explained,
“‘Democracy will soon degenerate into an anarchy; such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes and no man’s life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure, and every one of these will soon [mold] itself into a system of subordination of all the moral virtues and intellectual abilities, all the powers of wealth, beauty, wit and science, to the wanton pleasures, the capricious will, and the execrable (abominable) cruelty of one or a very few.”
That bears repeating. Did you catch that? A man will do what is right in his own eyes. Degenerate into anarchy. No man’s life or property, or reputation will be secure.
I stand corrected. Maybe we have deteriorated into a democracy.
If that’s the case, then a Trump presidency just might be the way back to our republic.
