Police across the country are hoping they’re prepared for today’s protests against President Trump. Several anti-fascist groups, known for using violent tactics are holding rallies in 20 cities. Some leaders are claiming the threats of violence are a hoax. However, given their history, that’s a tough pill to swallow.
The local organizer of a rally in Portland, Oregon, Robert Brown, is expecting a crowd between 200 and 1000 to attend. He is asserting that any talk about chaos erupting is nonsense. “It’s possible a few people may come expecting some kind of civil war, but if they do, I suspect they’ll be pretty disappointed,” said Brown,
Moreover, Refuse Fascism, the national organization behind the events, is denouncing the rumors of violence. “It’s absurd. Calling for a civil war?” said Andy Zee, one of the group’s leaders. “Pick a date for a civil war? Honestly, what do you say to this?” However, given the information on the organization’s website, it is hard to believe he is being truthful.
“Our protest must grow day after day and night after night—thousands becoming hundreds of thousands, and then millions. We must be determined to act to put a stop to the grave danger that the Trump/Pence Regime poses to the world by demanding that this whole regime be removed from power.”
Nevertheless, the information is cause for concern. Because there is the alarming joint report on Antifa from Homeland Security and the FBI. Titled “Baseline Comparison of US and Foreign Anarchist Extremist Movements,” the report documents the groups growing aggression, anti-police sentiments, and acquisition of dangerous weapons and training.
As a result, Portland Police Sgt. Chris Burley says his department is working hard to ensure that both protesters and counter-protesters stay safe. “We want to ensure that while people have differing viewpoints, that everyone has a safe space to exercise their First Amendment rights,” Burley said. “Without fear for their safety or their property.”
List of Scheduled Protests
In any case, despite promises of non-violence by organizers, we feel it is better to be safe than sorry. With that in mind, we are providing you a list of the cities where Antifa rallies are taking place. Each of them has a link where you can find more specific details like times and locations. Let’s all pray that these protests are much ado about nothing.
