You rescue your dog from a life of loneliness and sorrow. Don’t mess up now by giving your rescue dog poisonous foods. You may be surprised what made the list. How many of these foods did you already know?
Bacon: A Poisonous Food To Dogs
Are you kidding me! Can’t dogs have bacon? No! High-fat foods like bacon, ham, or sausage can cause pancreatitis in dogs. And as a high salt food, they can cause upset stomachs. In extreme cases, tummy trouble can cause dogs to drink too much water, leading to bloat, which can be fatal.
Xylitol: A Hidden Poison To Dogs
Did you know that candy, gum, toothpaste, baked goods, and some diet foods contain xylitol? “If digested, xylitol can cause your dog’s blood sugar to drop causing liver failure. Early symptoms include vomiting, lack of energy, and coordination problems. Eventually, your dog may have seizures. Liver failure can happen within just a few days” remarks pets.md.com
Garlic and Onions: Poisonous Foods To Dogs
No matter their form, whether raw, powdered, cooked, or dehydrated, onions and garlic are bad news for dogs. They can destroy a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. In a small amount, they might not do much harm. But eating a lot at once can lead to poisoning. Symptoms may include weakness, vomiting, and breathing problems.
Macadamia Nuts: A Poisonous Food To Dogs
Keep your dog away from macadamia nuts and foods that have macadamia nuts in them. It only takes six raw or roasted macadamia nuts to make a dog sick. Muscle shakes, vomiting, high temperature, and weakness in his back legs are common symptoms. Eating chocolate with the nuts will make it worse, maybe even leading to death.
Avocado: A Poisonous Food To Dogs
It’s true that pits from avocados are choking hazards for your dog. Something more noteworthy is the avocados themselves, they contain persin in their leaves, seeds, bark, and fruit. Though persin isn’t harmful to humans, it’s toxic in large amounts for dogs. If you have an avocado plant growing in your house or your yard, make sure your pup can’t get at it. Keep the chips and guacamole off limits too,
Chocolate: A Poisonous Food To Dogs
Most people have heard of chocolate being poisonous to dogs. Theobromine isn’t harmful to humans, but it’s the toxic part of chocolate for dogs. All kinds of chocolate contain theobromine, but especially dark chocolate and baking chocolate. It can cause a dog to vomit, have diarrhea, and become overly thirsty. On the more extreme side, it can cause abnormal heart rhythms, seizures, tremors, or death. No cocoa for the pups, please.
Coffee, Tea, and Other Caffeine: Poisonous Foods To Dogs
pets.webmd.com reports, “If you want to perk up your pup, play with him. Caffeine can be fatal. Even the beans and the grounds are toxic. Keep your dog away from energy drinks. Caffeine is also in some cold medicines and painkillers. Think your dog had caffeine? Watch for restlessness, fast breathing, and muscle twitches.”
