Tracking your pet can be one of the hardest jobs of the dog-owner.

Some compare owning a dog with having a kid. There are both differences and similarities here. However, you can definitely say that the child will most likely be incapable of developing a speed of 30 miles per hour and be perfectly suited to live in the wilderness. That is why losing your dog is a really big problem for a dog owner. And it’s the one that we’ve been struggling with for centuries. Leashes were the obvious answers, but you can’t have your dog on a leash all the time. Well, technology to the rescue! As of now, you can have your dogs exact location within seconds on your smartphone.

German Shepherds are incredibly intelligent dogs.  However, no one is safe from losing sight of their pet every once in a while. There is a way, however, to easily track down your pet with the new smart devices.

Microchips have helped a considerable measure of pets rejoin their owners.

In fact, it’s not only the dogs that this trend is preoccupied with! Theses things work with birds, big land mammals, even fish! Mostly for scientific purposes, they are being chipped and monitored in real time. A more practical use of the microchips, though, is tracking your lost dogs.

These microchips are attached to the dog’s body and have the dog’s and the owner’s info hardcoded inside. This means, that when the chip is scanned it can provide info about the owner’s whereabouts and the dog’s needs, condition and health.

There are several big companies that produce these microchips.  You can even find recommendations on WebMD regarding which one would suit your dog better. Some of these have simple info on you and the dog, while others are a bit more sophisticated. As we’ve mentioned earlier, some of the microchips available can provide real-time tracking of the dog, thanks to the GPS system utilization.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, there is a downside to this idea of having all dogs chipped with the critical info needed. The source of the problem is, as you might have guessed, corporate greed. Because there are several companies that produce the chips and the scanners that enable vets to read the info from the chip, their rivalry comes at a high cost. And this rivalry among the microchip organizations has produced huge issues.

The most serious issue with pets and microchips is that there is not an all-inclusive scanner.

This means that a vet can use his standard scanner for reading a chip on the dog, but it will not be able to decode the info on that chip. Simply because there is a corporate race to get as many dogs chipped by their own chips and as many vet clinics to get their own scanners.  Situations where vets are helpless and incapable of reading the info on the chip are becoming more common.

Nevertheless, there is a positive side to this story after all. Everything is moving towards a unified system of microchips for the dogs and the use of real-time location is becoming more widespread. This means only one thing – soon you won’t have to worry about your dog’s whereabout, as it will always be on your smartphone.
