Where Did The Grateful Dead Get Their Unusual Band Name?


Over the course of their career, The Grateful Dead played over 2,000 live concerts from the 1960s to 1995 under guitarist, singer-songwriter Jerry Garcia. But, all of this started when they decided to use the name of an Old English folk take.

Among Old English folk tales, the Grateful Dead is often a common theme. Certain villagers may refuse to bury the body of a dead man because he owed his creditors a great deal of money. But, this was both bad luck and bad omen.

So, many times, a traveler would pay the debt for the dead man. Plus, this would also lead to a proper burial for the man.
