The Real Reason Elvis Presley Met President Nixon

The picture of President Nixon shaking hands with Elvis Presley is the most requested photograph in the US National Archive’s history. The story behind the photo, which was taken a few days before Christmas in 1970, has actually been made into a film that stars Michael Shannon as the King.

That morning, the King arrived at the northwest gate of the White House with a hand-written letter for the President. The musician wrote the scratchy letter on the red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Washington. Elvis wrote his intentions for the meeting on six pages of American Airlines notepaper.

“Dear Mr. President,” he wrote. “I am Elvis Presley and admire you and Have Great Respect for your office…I would love to meet you just to say hello if you’re not too busy…”
