Jack White Believes (And Hopes) Rock Music Is “About To Explode Again”
Musician Jack White loves a challenge. On stage with the White Stripes, he would purposefully place the piano and the guitar a certain distance apart so he had to run across stage. Now, with his new album, he’s looking for a new challenge.
The new challenge meant spending three days with musicians he had never played with before to create a new sound. “I had no idea if we’d be able to communicate musically,” said Jack White about the new performers.
He actually chose to play with those who were previously associated with Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Kanye West. “It couldn’t been a recipe for disaster,” he said.
Jack White Talks About New Challenges
“I think it would scare the hell out of most people, so it was very enticing to me,” said Jack White. It only took about ten minutes for White to know that his unusual idea would work, and then some.
“There was so much amazing music being played,” he said. “Some of those songs could take up an entire side of an album, like a Miles Davis record or a Funkadelic record,” he mused.
The real point of the experiment was to explore the mood of the room and then work with it, expand it, and beyond.
The Result Was…Boarding House Reach
Jack White said it almost hurt his feelings to condense the tracks from his latest collaboration. “The entire record, to me, is incredibly modern. I wanted to take punk, hip-hop and rock & roll, and funnel it all into a 2018 time capsule.”
White took some time off between his last few albums to spend more time with his young children. But, when he did come back, he wanted to get back to his roots. The first result was “Connected by Love,” the album’s first single.
In addition to the album, White also commented on his company, Third Man Records. “We see it at Third Man all the time, a lot of young rock ’n’ roll acts,” he said. “And I can tell in the last couple years it’s definitely different than it was five years ago. So I can tell something’s about to explode again.”
