Movie Icon Johnny Depp Joins Stone Temple Pilots For Tour Opener

Not long ago, Johnny Depp made his way onto The New Basement Tapes. Alongside musicians like Marcus Mumford, Elvis Costello, and Rhiannon Giddens, Depp performed songs inspired by Bob Dylan. Now, he’s on stage with Stone Temple Pilots.

Stone Temple Pilots began their 2018 tour with new lead singer Jeff Gutt in Santa Clarita, California. The 19-song set also featured a special appearance by actor Johnny Depp, who sang “Sex Type Thing.”

In addition, Depp also sang a cover of MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams” with Wayne Kramer. But, this isn’t the first time the actor made a surprise appearance. In fact, it’s always a possibility for fans in the California area.

Before the Stone Temple Pilots, Johnny Depp has also performed with bassist Robert DeLeo in a side project known as Alice Cooper’s Hollywood Vampires. The group sang “Vasoline” and “Meadow.”

The performance opened with “Regeneration.” The band actually hadn’t played that song since 2001. In addition, they also sang “Glide” and “Roll Me Under” for the first time, which arrived a month ago.

The shows will run through March 17 at the Pub Station Ballroom in Montana.

New Songs, New Tours, And More From STP

According to UCR, “Stone Temple Pilots will release a self-titled album on March 16, their first with Gutt, who was introduced as their vocalist in November at a concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The former X Factor contestant replaced Chester Bennington, who left in 2015 to concentrate on his role in Linkin Park.”

The set list began with “Regeneration” and “Wicked Garden.” Towards the end, they finished out the concert with “Dead & Bloated,” “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart,” “Kick Out the Jams,” and finally, “Sex Type Thing.”

As always their sound remains a blend of 1980s and 1990s hard rock. Each record has it’s own unique style, or sonic blueprint, but fans worship the variety. Officially, STP has been described as either neo-psychedelic or alternative metal.
