To put it briefly, Garth Brooks has returned to music after a 14-year hiatus. And he’s returning with a splash, with plans to drop his album, “Gunslinger,” on November 28.

As a matter of fact, he visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show on October 21 to chat, joke, and play some music. For the first time on television, Brooks played his new single,  “Baby, Let’s Lay Down and Dance.” Ellen asked him to explain the title of the song — no fluff, just a straight answer.

“It’s ‘Baby, Let’s Lay Down and Dance,’ which is [an] awkward way to dance, I think,” Ellen said to Garth. “I tweeted you about it. I was confused about the title and some of your fans answered what they thought it was. But you explain to me what ‘Baby, Let’s Lay Down and Dance’ means.”

Furthermore, after Garth started his answer with “I think it’s, um…,” Ellen interrupted him, saying, “Seriously. Don’t try to, ‘Oh, I think it’s…’”

So Garth said he was thinking about snow angels while writing it. Ellen saw through that answer right away. Then he sheepishly replied, “There’s only one thing left [for it to mean], right?”

Ellen took a step further, as she has been known to do.

“So then my question to you is, how often do you lay down and dance, and what is your favorite room to lay down and dance in?” she asked.

At any rate, with a big smile, Brooks replied, “Any room with Mrs. Yearwood in it.”

Smooth, Garth. Real smooth.

Furthermore, Brooks says on his website that this song was a fun song to write and is a fun tune to play.

“‘Baby, Let’s Lay Down and Dance’ was just a fun title that Kent Blazy has had in his book of titles forever, always threatening to write it,” Brooks says. “So one day Kim, Kent and I sat down and wrote it. We got a little help from Steve Dorff. Then Victoria Shaw finished it. In the middle of this, Kim Williams passed away. I’ve got to tell you, I love love love this song, but probably my greatest joy is the fact that this is a Kim Williams song. Not only did it make this record, it’s the first single off this record.”

When he talked with iHeartRadio, he said it was a great choice for an album single.

“It just jumps out when you hear it,” Brooks said. “It’s great way to introduce everybody to the new record and the new sound, which hopefully will fit in with the old sound, and it’ll all just be Garth.”
