So what’s the pressure for women to wear makeup all the time? Who made that rule?
The #NoMakeup selfie craze, where celebrities post selfies with not a touch of makeup, first started with a teenage mom. It has since caught the attention of some big stars, like Alicia Keys, who is promising to go naked-faced during The Voice tapings. She’s the newest addition to the four coaches.
“I remember when I first started to be in the public eye,” Keys says. “Everyone had something to say – ‘She’s so hard, she acts like a boy, she must be gay, she should be more feminine!’”
“But the truth is, I was just from New York, and everyone I knew acted like that. But this wasn’t the streets of New York. This was the harsh, judgmental world of entertainment and my biggest test yet.”
Country artists have gotten in on this movement, including Taylor Swift, Reba McEntire, and Jennifer Nettles.
For example, Carrie Underwood posted on Instagram a photo of her post workout, obviously without any makeup. The caption reads, “I’m a sweaty mess, but I’m a sweaty mess in an adorable tank! @caliabycarrie #staythepath #nomakeup BeNice #run #KeepingItReal #cardio #love.”

So, generally nice responses. But think about it: if the public only ever saw you with makeup during interviews, photo shoots, and concerts and then they see your naked face — that’s brave to put yourself out there like that.
