It was an interview that was a bit like a train wreck– gruesome, but impossible to look away from. It was surprising, given that Carrie Underwood is usually poised and funny. She’s typically anything but awkward. But we all have our moments. Watching her responses go from bad to worse, she had to wish she could get those three minutes of her life back.
The interview was to congratulate her on winning the CMA for Female Vocalist of the Year for the third time, which occurred in 2008. From the very start, it’s an awkward interview. First of all, when the camera pans to her and her interviewer, Underwood is making an odd duck face, sucking in her cheeks and pursing her lips. Maybe she didn’t realize she was on camera?
Either way, the beginning face definitely set the tone for the entire thing. As did her first answer. When asked how she felt about winning the award three years in a row, poor Underwood produced word salad that basically gave credit to every blonde joke ever made.
“How about me? I’m, I’m, wow,” she stammered. “I got nothin’. [If] it’s not on a teleprompter right now, I can’t say it. I don’t know what’s up.”
Wrong Choice of Words
The interview got even more interesting– and awkward– when it came to talking about her co-host, Brad Paisley. Her interviewer commented that her seven or eight wardrobe changes throughout the night were pretty awesome. Her response?
“Yeah, Mr. Paisley also had a pretty awesome wardrobe change himself early in the show when he went from, the um, yeah from playing, to…yeah, I saw a lot of Brad. A lot of people saw a lot of Brad.”
Her interviewer then teased her that she took a picture and had it on her phone. Underwood responded with, “Yeah I didn’t know it was coming or I would have grabbed it.” Realizing what she just implied, she quickly clarified that she meant she would have grabbed her phone to take a picture.
She had to be dying. This was evidenced by her next idea, which was to say, “Let’s talk about you and all the ladies on the wall behind us,” pointing to the background photos.
Other highlights include her admitting that Cosmopolitan magazine was her sorority Bible and that she voted for herself for her CMA. She said that she probably cast her own winning vote. It was just an entirely awkward interview, though endearing because she didn’t seem to let it phase her. Because we all have those moments we wish we could redo.
