It was a 26-year marriage that abruptly ended. The separation was so painful it took more than a year for her to open up about it. And when she finally did, Reba had some shocking admissions about her divorce from Narvel Blackstock.
“Take My Marbles”
It’s unlikely that a marriage which lasted more than two decades could end without some strife, if not scandal. But in actuality, there wasn’t much of that. All things considered, the ending of Reba McEntire‘s divorce from Narvel Blackstock seemed amicable enough. Thus, it wasn’t how the marriage ended that seems so shocking– it’s that it ended at all.
Because, apparently, no one was more surprised than Reba.
In an interview with CMT, more than a year after it ended, Reba admitted that it was in no way her idea. In fact, she was quite caught off guard, despite the fact they had lived apart for a time. But in the end, she agreed to it.
“The divorce was not my idea. I didn’t want it in any shape, form or fashion,” the “Little Rock” singer told CMT’s Cody Alan. “So it was really hard to make the adjustment when someone’s not happy. I just want everybody to be happy in their lives, because our lives are too short to be miserable.”
Then she added some wisdom from her father, “I just thought it was the best thing to take my marbles and go play somewhere else, is what daddy used to always say.”
According to one source, Reba’s famous stepdaughter attempted to keep the two together. Fans may not know this, but Narvel Blackstock was also Reba’s manager. His son, Brandon Blackstock, is married to Kelly Clarkson. So, while they were married, Clarkson was Reba’s step-daughter-in-law. And apparently, Kelly and Reba are very close.
Despite Clarkson’s efforts, they did end up divorced. Reba and Narvel have one son together, Shelby Blackstock. Shelby is a race car driver. Reba says that she and Narvel are still friends, but also admits that it has been a difficult adjustment.
However, Reba is definitely a woman of resilience. Just this year she released a faith-based double album and seems as busy as ever. Apparently, you just can’t keep the Queen of Country down.
