“You’ve come a long way, baby.” Never has this been more true than of the 2005 winner of American Idol, Carrie Underwood. The 4th season champion is now a seven-time Grammy wining artist. Her story is almost that of a fairy tale.
A Girl from Oklahoma
May 2017 was 12 years after her Idol win. And it seems that even Underwood is still surprised.
“12 years later and I’m still not sure how it all happened to me! 12 years ago today, my dreams came true and life has been a dream ever since! I am beyond blessed and so thankful! #AmericanIdol #TBT,” she captioned photos herself from her American Idol days.
Born in 1983, she grew up in rural Oklahoma. According to biography.com, her childhood was simple, but happy.
“I had a very happy childhood full of the wonderful simple things that children love to do. Growing up in the country, I enjoyed things like playing on dirt roads, climbing trees, catching little woodland creatures and, of course, singing.”
It was during her senior year of high school that she decided to try out for American Idol. A seminal moment in her life, it was a decision she would celebrate for the rest of it (you can watch her audition below.)
Her first album release was in 2005, shortly after her win. Some Hearts went multi-platinum, becoming the fastest-selling female album in history. By age 26, she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry (by none other than Garth Brooks). She was the youngest Opry member at the time of her induction.
The same year she was inducted into the Opry, she also co-hosted the CMA Awards with Brad Paisley. This was also a groundbreaking event. The two recently finished co-hosting the 51st CMA Awards, their 10th straight year of doing so.
Of course, she also continued to have significant success with her singles and her album releases. She charted well on both the country and pop charts.
Listening to her audition now, you can hear the pitch and promise of her voice. But in it, she is much more the girl from Muskogee than Manhattan. Fame has not only enhanced her voice, but also her looks. From her rather frumpy beginnings, she is now one of the sleekest and most polished women in country music.
Looking at her life, you can almost believe in fairy tales.
