The daughter of the famous country singer George Morgan, Lorrie Morgan began wowing Grand Ole Opry members at just 13-years-old. Her career had eclipsed her father’s (who died when she was a teenager). But that doesn’t mean she’s immune to tragic loves and losses. In a new podcast, she opens up about her career and personal life.
A very public personal life
Lorrie has long mesmerized audiences with her sultry country voice. When she joined the Opry in 1984, she was the youngest member at the time–only 25 years old.
She’s had numerous hits over the years and was a hallmark of country music in the 80s and 90s. Three of her tracks (all released in the 90s) took the No. 1 spot on the charts. These were “5 Minutes,” “What Part of No?” and “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.”
But since the public fell in love with her music, they also experienced her very public personal life.
Most of the publicity has been about her marriages. In 2010, she married for the sixth time. This was to Randy White. But her previous marriages (two of whom were too famous country music singers) garnered attention.
Her first marriage was to Ron Gaddis, a musician in George Jones’ band. They wed in 1979 and divorced in 1981. That marriage produced a daughter, Morgan Anastasia. In 1986, she married country singer Keith Whitley, with whom she has a son, Jesse Keith. Whitley died in 1989 of alcohol poisoning. Her marriage with Whitley is arguably the most notorious.
Morgan then had a brief marriage to Brad Thompson, a bus driver for Clint Black, from 1991 to 1993. Next was singer/songwriter Jon Randall, from 1996 to 1999. Morgan and singer Sammy Kershaw married in 2001 but divorced six years later.
Now she’s ready to discuss them all.
Children of Song
Her new podcast, Children of Song, is produced by Fox News. The podcast features both herself and her son, Jesse Keith Whitley.
In the first episode, Lorrie opens up about her relationship with Whitley. This includes stories of his addiction and her inability to save him from it. She also discusses how she carried on for herself, her children, and her fans.
This episode will make you laugh, and it will make you cry. What else could you expect?
