Rocker and one-half of The White Stripes, Jack White, played A Prairie Home Companion on October 15. He surprised the audience with a guest — country artist Margo Price.

White and Price, whom The FADER called “Country’s Next Star,” sang “I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)” by The White Stripes.

“We thought we’d bring a friend from Nashville with us,” White told new host Chris Thile (from The Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek).

“I’m Lonely” is on The White Stripes’ fifth album, “Get Behind Me Satan” (2005).

Price had recorded her debut album, “Midwest Farmer’s Daughter,” and pitched it around Nashville with no luck. Eventually, she connected with White and his label, Third Man Records. Price said a friend told her, “You’re on Jack’s radar, he wants to hear the record.”

“I sent it over, and it just felt like home,” Price says on her website. “A good creative space to be involved in, and everyone is so down to earth. It was awesome when I met with Jack. He told me he thought my voice was a breath of fresh air, and that he loved the record.”

She joined the roster and is now the only country artist on the label.

“[Third Man Records has] been so supportive and completely changed my mind about a lot of people in the music industry because I’ve not always had the best experience with labels and management and things like that,” Price told The Boot. “This has just been a complete 360 to have them in my corner and have them fighting for me and out there working for me.”

Saturday night’s show was Thile’s first time hosting A Prairie Home Companion on his own. He was named longtime host Garrison Keillor‘s successor in 2015 and has been co-hosting the show with Keillor in recent months.

About Margo Price

How the 32-year-old singer-songwriter got into country music is quite different, and more heartbreaking than most artists.

“I lost my firstborn son to a heart ailment and I was really down and depressed,” Price says on her website. She then say, “I was drinking too much. I was definitely lost. I did some things that I regret very much now that resulted in a brush with the law. Thank god I had my friends and family to keep me going. Coming through that, I thought, ‘I’m just going to write music that I want to hear.’ It was a big turning point.”

She’ll be staying busy for the rest of the year after already touring on a full schedule. Hey, she’s got to promote her album — people have to hear these songs.

“I hope that the record helps people get through hard times or depression,” she says. “That’s ultimately what music did for me in my childhood, and especially in my early adult years. It’s about being able to connect personally with a song, and hopefully, it makes you feel not so lonely.”
