Blake Shelton finally has some real competition on The Voice, thanks to fellow county superstar and The Voice coach Kelly Clarkson. Shelton has won more times than any coach and done so by utilizing more traditional country music. Though Clarkson is arguably a country/pop crossover, she certainly does know country music and the country sound. So how will Shelton fare next to a woman who isn’t afraid to tear a page from his playbook? The fighting has started early, so it looks like it’s going to be a bloody battle.
It goes without saying that Kelly Clarkson knows a thing or two about winning a reality television singing competition. The winner of the premiere season of American Idol, Clarkson went on the international fame with country hits like “Because of You” (with Reba McEntire) and “Don’t You Wanna Stay” (with Jason Aldean). Of course, she also had huge pop hits, including “Stronger” and “Catch My Breath.” Clarkson was nominated for a fourth Grammy in 2018, though didn’t take home the win. So no matter which way you slice it, she is fierce competition for anyone on The Voice.
But she is especially fierce competition for Blake Shelton.
Shelton has more wins than any other coach on The Voice. He’s done so with a consistent formula of young performers with country voices. And he utilizes traditional country songs to promote them. But now he has another coach with country in her blood. So there’s a strong possibility that he’s going to lose some of those contestants to Kelly Clarkson.
And the fighting has already begun.
The Voice 2018
In an interview with Parade, Blake Shelton commented on how excited he was for Kelly Clarkson to join The Voice.
“This is one of the greatest vocalists … the greatest people I have ever met,” Blake Shelton said. Then smugly added, “And Kelly has absolutely no experience on this show whatsoever.”
But Clarkson isn’t one to back down. She quickly retorted, “I had enough experience that he had me mentor his team on the second season.”
In a separate interview the magazine, she said she fully intended to go after Shelton’s picks. I’ll tell you what I had to freaking fight Blake on,” Clarkson disclosed. “People think they’re betraying country music when they don’t pick him. It is hard to get a country artist on your team. We did, but it was really hard. It’s a really hard thing to navigate when he’s been on there for 14 seasons.”
We have no doubt Kelly Clarkson is up to the challenge. You can see her battle it out with Blake Shelton on the new season of The Voice Monday nights on NBC.
