Sometimes, people think meditation is difficult. They make it into this big giant thing then they avoid doing it altogether. Let’s clear something up: meditation is simple. It’s the mind that makes it into a big thing. Because funny how it works, but that’s what the mind likes to do. And you know what meditation likes to do, stop the mind from doing things like that in the first place.

I speculate it’s because the mind gets scared of meditation at some level. The mind, AKA EGO is terrified of pretty much everything. It’s like a sentry on a ship scanning for ice bergs to give warning. Except the problem is it thinks everything is life threatening. Even the little, itty, bity icebergs that won’t even ding your ship.

Why Don’t More People Meditate?

It’s because of the hesitation so many people have when it comes to meditation that I decided to give some meditation tips for beginners. I’m not trying to explain to you how to meditate in great detail. Chances are you’ve already read about that somewhere. But I would like to do is give you tips I use on a daily basis when meditation is proving to be challenging and I need to truly let go.

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. Like they say, the only bad meditation is the one you didn’t do. So very quickly, get comfy. You don’t have to sit in some weird position where your feet are all tangled up. The very purpose of meditation is for you to relax.

Once you’re comfortable, begin to breathe deeply. In through your nose and out through your mouth. That’s the basis of meditation, repeat that process for 3-5 minutes, 20-30 minutes or an hour if you can. That sounds simple right, but simple is not always the case.

Here’s Where My Meditation Tips for Beginners Will Help

If you have challenges meditating, the first thing to do is relax. A lot of people do and you’re not weird. There’s nothing wrong with you. That realization in itself is a huge one for most people and can often be enough to allow you to let go. It’s funny, but when experiences that shame us, even as simple as not being able to meditate, are brought out into the open, they tend to dissolve. Even the dark ones do.

Can You Stop Your Thoughts?Anyway, now that you know there’s nothing wrong with having difficulties meditating, let’s continue. What challenge do most people get? It’s the mind racing, and guess what, that’s completely normal. Until you’ve meditated for several weeks already, the mind will race. And even if you’ve meditated for years, it can still race when stressful situations occur. So now I will give you some tips on what to do with a racing mind.

First of all, understand that you can’t stop thoughts entirely. Maybe for a few seconds, but forever isn’t realistic. What you can do is learn to watch your thoughts and let them pass by peacefully. I like to visualize my thoughts coming in, in a few different ways. First, I imagine them flying in from all directions and as they hit me, they simply fall away peacefully and I detach from them. Always remember to focus on my breathing at the same time. Another way to let go of unwanted thoughts, is a tip I learned while listening to Wayne Dyer speak.

Can You Stop Your Thoughts?

Imagine your thoughts are coming through your head on a conveyor belt. When you come to a thought you don’t like, speed up the conveyor and let it roll on buy. And, when you come to thought you do like, try and stop the conveyor belt for a little while and let the positive thought grow. This is a good visualization for attracting more positive thoughts and can be used at any time.

Lastly, if your thoughts are racing, imagine a mouse hole where your thoughts are coming out of into your head.  Then imagine you as the cat, and with every thought that attempts to make its way through the mouse hole, you swat it down like a cat snacking a mouse. This is a good visualization for really calming the mind, and putting you in power of the mind.

What Does The Mind Do?

You see, there’s a secret. Your mind will use you, unless you learn to use your mind. It can be one of two things, your best friend or your worst enemy. And learning how to meditate is essential for making your mind a friend. Really, your mind is the most powerful tool in the Universe. It can either give you everything you want, or nothing at all. But it’s up to you to learn how to use it and then choose.

And, with these meditation tips for beginners, you can learn how to quickly calm your mind. Just remember, always focus on your breathing best you can. When your mind wanders too far, return to your breathing. Try breathing in counting to 5 and then breathing out counting to 5. In time you’ll learn to relax and your mind will subside.

To finish this off, I’ll leave you with a quote I once heard. I don’t know where it came from, but it’s a good one, “When the noises of the mind subside, the true symphony of life begins.”

Enjoy your day; meditate as best you can. And most importantly, remember to be gentle with yourself. Namaste my brothers and sisters. And if you don’t know what Namaste means, it means, “My soul, sees your soul.” Peace!
