It’s time for your birthday and you get the age-old question, “What would you like to do for your birthday?” This year, make it different. Keep the party hats and cake but do something only grandma or grandpa can do.
As grandparents, we’re great at telling stories from our past. We usually pick the most humorous and inspiring but sometimes tell of the hardships.
We also like to tell our grandkids memories from raising their moms and dads.
However, there may come a time when we’d like to sit everyone down, somewhere between the cake and the presents, and foretell–so to speak.
In biblical times, the father of the clan would take time to pronounce a blessing upon each of his children and sometimes his grandkids. He knew there was power in his words for those present as well as for future generations. And he made the most of the opportunity.
In modern society, we rarely formulate blessings and speak them into the lives of our loved ones. However, when it’s grandma’s or grandpa’s birthday, and we’ve been asked what we’d like to do, I think a “blessin session” is right on.
What’s the best way to construct and pronounce a formal blessing?
First, start with the meaning of the person’s name. This requires some homework, so get one of your grandkids to help look them up on the internet.
Second, write down a character quality or two of each person after the meaning of their name.
Third, give a one or two line memory of you and that person which is particularly dear to your heart.
Fourth, think of a future hope you have for the person’s life.
Lastly, type or write out, get your older grands help if needed, the four-part blessing for each of your children and/or grandchildren.
When the party is roaring, break in with your with your surprise. Call each person to you and read their blessing. Then give it to them as a keepsake.
What did grandma or grandpa want to do for their birthday? Bless the ones they love.
More than the food, the gifts and the decorations are the treasures in a grandparent’s heart that many would never know.
