As grandparents, we all want to nurture the precious relationship we have with our grandchildren. Therefore it is understandable if we want to spend as much time possible with them. Fortunately, some grandparents live near their children, which is easier for them to nurture that bond. But still, grandparents who live far from their children shouldn’t worry. You can still create a deep and loving relationship with you grandchildren by looking for ways to strengthen the connection.
Spending time with your grandchildren should be fun and free of worries. You can make it educational, like trips to the zoo or a museum, or it could simply be listening to your grandchildren telling you how their day was while baking a cake or some cookies.
The goal here is that the time spent with your grandchildren should be memorable, relaxed, full of understanding, and love. Just the act of listening without interrupting, a word of encouragement, or just being there for them speaks volume.
Sharing hobbies or skills with your grandchildren is one way of providing all of the above.
To all the grandparents out there, here are the things that would likely happen while you teach your grandchild a hobby or a skill.
Becoming more close to one another.
An activity that can be enjoyed by the grandparent and grandchild is a great way for them to have a conversation. This is a great opportunity for the grandparents to share a bit about themselves to their grandchild. You can start by telling them what draw you into the hobby in the first place or how it all started.
You can also ask your grandchild what are her hobbies. By asking your grandchild what she likes, wants or love doing, will give her the impression that she is important. Being involved with each other will strengthen the grandparents and grandchildren relationship.
It’s a win-win situation.
As a grandparent, it is healthy for us to have social contacts. In fact, it is strongly encouraged. When we spend time with our family and friends our loneliness and depression will disappear.
Teaching our grandchild a hobby or a craft is not only an advantage for them but for you as well. The more we teach the more we use our mental ability, which is a great mental exercise for us.
The grandchildren would love to learn a new craft from Grandma and Grandpa. Chances are they are going to share it with their friends, and would likely shape a child to be what they will be when they grow up. Imagine the effect you have with your grandchild.
You can be a role model for aging.
This is very important for children to understand that everyone would eventually grow old. With the society instilling ideas to the younger generation that to be beautiful, you have to be wrinkle-free, skinny, tanned, tall, have a blemish-free skin and the list goes on. You as a grandparent can be a great role model for aging gracefully. Accepting that everything will pass, everything has to change, is a great lesson we can impart to our grandchildren.
