When you first set up the game, you are given a choice among the three starter Pokémons: Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur. This is a familiar scene for long-time (Game Boy!) players as these are the same starters offered by Professor Oak in Pokémon Red and Blue. But of course, there is another first-generation Pokémon title: Pokémon Yellow where players had a fourth starter option: Pikachu.
Turns out Pokemon Go developer Niantic Labs wanted the players to feel the nostalgia and give you the very same fourth starter option, everybody’s favorite electric mouse – Pikachu! How?
- When you start the game, Professor Willow will offer you the three starter Pokémons. Don’t tap on any of them, ignore and walk away so they disappear on the map. (Make sure you’re ready to walk!)
- They will appear again and ignore them four times. (Sorry, starter trio!)
- When the trio appears again, they will now be joined by the fourth starter: Pikachu! (Pika!)
- From here, just tap Pikachu and use your Pokeball to capture your first Pokémon. (Woohoo!)
