With Pokémon Sun and Moon’s release date looming closer, we’re expecting a lot of new trainers coming into the scene thanks to Pokémon GO. While a large portion of Pokémon GO players are already well-versed in the Pokémon games, there’s still a considerable chunk of the population who’s first Pokémon game is either Pokémon GO or more likely, Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow from 18 to 20 years back. Don’t worry, the newer Pokémon games still retain their old charm, but Pokémon GO is still a different beast from the ones we know in these aspects:

We Don’t Need Tall Grass

The second most memorable quote from Professor Oak will be “Don’t go into the tall grass, it could be dangerous!”. Pokémon live in the tall grass and it would be very disastrous if a Rattata bit you outside Pallet Town (but frankly, it will only know Tackle by that point). Pokémon GO dispenses the tall grass and now Pokémon can just attack you out of nowhere, anywhere!

We Can’t Trade Pokémon (yet)

Trading is very vital to Pokémon, and frankly, it’s the only way you’ll “catch ‘em all”. Different versions of Pokémon have different unique Pokémon, also some Pokémon like Haunter and Kadabra will only evolve when traded, the only way to obtain them is to trade with a friend. Pokémon GO is still in the beta phase and trading with others isn’t an option yet, but there are rumors that come October, we will have an update that will finally let us trade.

We Carry Way More Than 6 Pokémon

A core rule of Pokémon is that trainers can only carry 6 Pokémon at a time, no excuses. To disobey this tenet is to incur the wrath of the Pokémon League itself, well, except in Pokémon GO. Pokémon GO trainers can carry (or have instant access) to 250 Pokémon at any time by default, and can be more if you spend Pokécoins to upgrade your storage. Although as a nod to the main Pokémon games, you can only bring 6 of your Pokémon to gym battles.

Our Pokémon Only Know 2 Moves

It’s a well-known fact that a Pokémon can only learn four moves (also the reason why people say John Cena is a Pokémon). The most noticeable difference of Pokémon GO from the classics is that they can only learn half of that. Moreover, Pokémon from Pokémon GO can only learn attack moves and while that can pass in story mode, PvP is a different story.

Only Candies Are Needed To Evolve Pokémon

Pokémon evolving is a one of the biggest features that draw players to the Pokémon series. In the main series games, Pokémon can evolve through different methods, leveling up (with certain moves, at certain times or even in specific areas), being given elemental stones, being traded (some while holding certain items), and one of the most unique is the 3DS being held upside down when it level ups. Pokémon GO simplifies it to giving your Pokémon candies to evolve into their next stage.

Pokémon GO can have some differences with other Pokémon games, but don’t be discouraged. Moreover, if you love Pokémon GO, there’s no doubt that you’ll love other Pokémon games.
