The media went into a frenzy last week over Roseanne Barr’s so-called racist tweets, and the immediate response from ABC that followed. Critics were quick to point out that Roseanne’s fate was VERY different from Phil Robertson’s. Here we discuss why.
Fans were over the moon to hear that Roseanne would return to the airwaves. The show had been gone for almost twenty years, and yet fans were still interested when a reboot was mentioned.
We as Duck Dynasty fans can relate. Every day we wish, hope, and pray that Duck Dynasty will come back on the air. Even if it was twenty years down the line, we’d still be eager to see what the Robertsons are up to. Lucky for us, we can keep up with the cast through their various outside projects. We can also watch In the Woods With Phil, where Phil Robertsons shares his un-politically correct thoughts. Roseanne fans just don’t have that luxury…
Roseanne Barr tweeted derogatory remarks against Valerie Jerrett. Valerie served as a senior advisor to President Obama. The exact tweet read, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”
To the shock and surprise of many fans and onlookers, immediate action was taken against Roseanne. ABC’s entertainment president Channing Dungey said, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” The network immediately pulled the show, and cut ties with Roseanne altogether. Roseanne also lost her agency representation.
Critics were quick to point out how different this response was to many in the past. In previous years we’ve seen celebrities make controversial, offensive, or racist claims, without huge repercussions. One celebrity everyone seems to want to compare? Phil Robertson.
