The Big Bang Theory Rip-Off
Did you know that in the foreign country of Belarus, there’s an unauthorized remake of The Big Bang Theory? The show creator Chuck Lorre noticed this obvious dupe and used his position with the series to speak out against the injustice.
Chuck Lorre got wind of a new series in Belarus entitled The Theorists. The show follows friends Sheldon, Leo, Raj, and Hovard as they met their blonde neighbor Natasha. The show wasn’t just similar in premise to TBBT. It was an almost exact translation of each episode. Pretty crazy.
Chuck Lorre is known for writing personal essays in vanity cards at the end of each episode. On one such card he wrote, “Belarus does have a bustling TV production industry. One of their most recent hits is a sitcom about four nerdy scientists who live next door to a beautiful blonde waitress. The characters are named Sheldon, Leo, Hovard, Raj and Natasha, and the show is entitled, The Theorists.”
He then went on to explain that the show had a similar, yet not as catchy, theme song as TBBT. “Each episode begins with a rapid-fire montage of images which takes us from the dawn of time to the present moment. Keeping with that theme, the montage is scored with what is probably the worst piece of recorded pop music since the dawn of time. And finally, each episode appears to be a Russian translation of a Big Bang Theory episode.”
Johnny Galecki Speaks Out
Johnny Galecki recently referenced The Theorists during an appearance on Stephen Colbert‘s show. Colbert said, “Now the sure sign that you are a huge hit is when other countries will engage in copyright infringement to steal…” Johnny quickly cut him off saying, “Blatant plagiarism.”
Galecki says, “They didn’t even try…there was no attempt…it was the same dialogue, the wardrobe.” However, he did have one good thing to say about the show…
The Theorists Cast Quit
The cast of the Big Bang Theory rip-off reportedly quit the show after learning it was a plagiarized series. Johnny says, “they did not know…and to their credit when they found out they walked.”
Coincidentally that walk-out started with the character playing Leonard, the same as Johnny Galecki. The Belarus actor had hopes of someday working in America and did not want to spoil his own reputation.
Johnny seemed in good spirits about the whole thing. It’s crazy to think someone would try to get away with this.
