Maggie’s clutching her knees on the ground next to Glenn’s grave, in the beginning of “Hearts Still Beating.” Dressed in boots, jeans, and a man’s shirt, she mourns underneath a baseball cap.
Glenn and Abraham are the only two bodies buried at Hilltop as every other loss has been burned on The Walking Dead. Wildflowers grow next to the graves, and a short watchtower sits firm along the fence above the gravesite.
If you go back and re-watch the episode, you’ll see that symbolism abounds, and there’s probably an Easter egg or a few. So what’s going to happen with Maggie?
Gregory Is Intimidated of Maggie
Maggie puts on her fingerless gloves and climbs to the top of the tower to take her post as a guardian. Gregory approaches with an apple and gets her attention. He begins, “I know people are saying things…nice things…about you and Sasha (where Sasha sounds like a question as if he doesn’t know her name).”
Gregory is talking about the Saviors test run where Jesus, Sasha, and Maggie stopped a herd of walkers from killing the members of Hilltop. “They’re thinking you saved the place,” continued Gregory. “Don’t let it go to your head,” he said, finally getting to his point that he is the leader of Hilltop. But Maggie has something to say.
Maggie Isn’t Bothered
Maggie tells Gregory not to let this bother him, as she stands on the watch tower, ten feet above Gregory. The placement here is interesting. He’s physically beneath her, complaining about her power or potential power. She calmly tells him not to worry — showing leadership characteristics as she does.
Gregory then tries to tell Maggie that it doesn’t bother him what people are saying, which contradicts what he speaks to her in the first place. He shakes his head, polishes his apple, which is symbolic since fruit is harder to come by these days, showing his own power. Then, something interesting happens.
Maggie smiles and turns. Gregory asks what she is doing up there, which is another sign pointing to why he is a weak leader (obviously she’s looking for future dangers). She ignores him and asks if he’s going to eat the apple. Another watcher said, “Dude, you know she’s pregnant,” which causes Gregory to give up the apple, and therefore, his command.
Gregory is weak. Maggie is strong. The episode ends with the group together once again (finally!). Daryl is free, Rick has his gun back, and Maggie is there to start the war conversation with the people of Hilltop. Things are finally back in place on The Walking Dead.
