‘The Walking Dead’ Comic Prepares Whisperer War After Issues for 2017

In February of 2017, Image Comics will print two new comics that deal with the aftermath of the “Whisperer War” story arc.

All is Lost

Issue 163 begins with a story called “Conquered.” It will be available online and in comic stores on February first of next year. The current description for the issue reads, “In the aftermath of the Whisperer War: ALL IS LOST.”

That could mean anything, but it certainly sounds like major characters could be killed. Scott Gimple has hinted at the Whisperers coming to AMC this season, so perhaps readers will get a sneak peek of what will happen next on the series.

Maggie Takes Charge

The other issue, number 164, is called “A Fallen House.” Currently, the description for this issue is, “Maggie leads the survivors from the Hilltop to Alexandria…to see it overrun with the dead.”

This issue will hit shelves two weeks later on February 15th (which is a shorter wait than usual).

These issues imply that Alexandria may lose its battle with the Whisperers even though the issue before has a momentum swing in favor of the Safe Zone.

On the cover of Issue 163, Rick’s hand (which is missing in the comic) is reaching up with undead hands. While these covers are generally somewhat misleading, such as the cover that portrayed Negan and Alpha as lovers, before he killed her.

The Walking Dead from Image hasn’t printed two issues in a single month in some time. The last time was the “All Out War” in 2013. These issues had the war between Rick’s Alexandria army, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom when they battled the Saviors.

For comic book readers, this is major since that war is where we’re headed now on the series, and is equally or more iconic than the prison war with the Governor (both in terms of action and Rick’s growth as a character).

The comic will hit shelves this February with issues 163 and 164. The Walking Dead on AMC airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m., and there are only a few episodes left before the mid-season break.

How do you think The Whisperers will affect The Walking Dead plot?
