Boots Are A Survivor’s Best Friend
Brass-knuckle knives, crossbows, and guns are necessities on The Walking Dead, but it’s a great pair of boots that determine survival during the apocalypse. As John Wick might say, clothing during battle should be “tactical.”
The Walking Dead’s costume designer, Eulyn Womble, recently spoke about how the designers and creators come up with clothing that walkers can’t chomp through and so the characters can easily move.
The Georgia heat is also a major player when coming up with proper clothing.
Boots Are Armor
Womble told Footwear News, “I always put boots on, especially the women — it’s armor. Everything you’re wearing is armor. We’ve already established that with duct tape, [zombies] can not bite through, so it’s always good leather boots for walking or fighting.”
The costume designer actually headed over to 24: Legacy with actor Corey Hawkins with her tactical clothing knowledge. Despite her absence, the show has certainly established a look for the series.
There are also differences in clothing, such as how Oceanside and the Heapsters both look different from other groups.
Don’t Mess With These Characters
“Michonne has lots of studs on her boot in the beginning,” said Womble. “That was all a part of the plan, but Danai, in real life, wanted something more comfortable for her knees. So I covered her sneakers — a hiking boot covered with leather boot topper so it makes it look like boots, but it’s really not.”
Womble added that every piece of clothing is worn on purpose, especially with characters like Michonne, Maggie, and Carol. Of the three, each has their own “Oh shit, maybe you don’t want to mess with this one” look to them.
Carol, Michonne, and Maggie certainly present that vibe within the character, so it’s vital they also show it on the outside.
