Rick’s Willingness To Die May Finally Kill Him
With a bat to Carl’s head, Rick made it clear he was willing to do whatever it takes to kill Negan. Having lost Glenn, Abraham, Sasha, Olivia, and Spencer, Rick sees Negan as a problem with only one solution: murder.
In Season 8, Scott Gimple said Rick Grimes “will suffer any loss, even his own self, to give his people and other people the life that they should live, where the world belongs to all of them and not just one person.”
While we’re all speculating which character may die next, assuming Rick Grimes to be safe as the main protagonist, perhaps he’ll die for the cause himself.
Showrunner Talks Rick’s Losses
“That’s the only choice,” said the showrunner. “So he’s willing to face the losses.” With that in mind, Season 8 of The Walking Dead will likely run more like a military operation, than a militia.
Gimple also said Rick Grimes finally understands the “enormity” of what they’re doing, in terms of how it will alter future generations. Rick proved this during a conversation with Michonne when they found the guns and supplies.
But it could mean that he’ll end up sacrificing himself…
Who Could Take Rick’s Place?
Because the showrunner said “suffer any loss, even his own self,” many speculate this could be an admission of a major death on the show: Rick Grimes. Kirkman has said it could be different from the comic, so it is possible.
It’s hard to imagine who would then led the show, however. Carl Grimes would be next in line if they follow the ideas of the Kingdom, and many fans would then want to see more of Daryl Dixon, but it doesn’t seem like he’s a leader.
While it’s unlikely that Rick Grimes will actually die in Season 8, he is willing to, so something horrible might happen to our fearless leader.
Do you think there’s any merit to Scott Gimple’s quote?
