The Complete Story Behind Hershel’s Glenn’s Maggie’s Watch

Maggie’s speech at the end of the episode was perhaps more important than all of the minor details throughout. In her hand, she held a watch that was given to Glenn by her father Hershel, so the watch has a great deal of significance to Maggie.

But it also represents the story arc of the series as a whole.

Maggie’s speech, which echoed, “Glenn didn’t know you, but he helped you. He put himself in danger for you. And that started it all — from Atlanta, to my daddy’s farm, to the prison, to here, to this moment now, not as strangers, — as family because Glenn chose to be there for you that day a long time ago.”

The widow’s final point is that Glenn made the decision to go fight, instead of her. The whole finale is actually about sacrifice. It starts with Abraham, who sacrifices himself to get Maggie to the doctor.

Then, Sasha also sacrifices herself, in her mind, for the greater good.

But the story behind the watch goes all the way back to Hershel. Maggie’s father originally had the watch and he gave it to Glenn to show acceptance into his family and give him permission to be with Maggie.

Earlier in the finale, Enid gives the watch to Maggie to remind her of Glenn, which is why she decides to help Rick fight in the first place. If the Kingdom and the Hilltoppers hadn’t decided to help Rick, Carl would be dead, and perhaps everyone else would also be dead.

The watch represents trust, time, and so much more on the series.

Who do you think will receive the watch next?
