Without a doubt, baby Judith has been the luckiest baby in the apocalypse. Somehow, she keeps quiet when surrounded by walkers, and despite losing several babysitters (and her real father) she seems to be okay so far.

In some ways, Carl’s little sister is the physical manifestation of hope. Baby Judith is one of the reasons that Rick allowed himself to live under Negan’s rule. If it were not for Carl and Judith, Rick may have risked his life already.

In the comics, both Judith and Lori had a different fate.

On AMC’s version of The Walking Dead, Lori died in childbirth after Maggie had to give her a C-section on the floor of their prison home. Carl then had to kill the reanimated version of his mother, which led to the growth of his character, plus a baby sister.

In the comics, Lori wasn’t killed during childbirth. Her fate was actually quite worse. When the Governor attacked the prison, Lori was running with Baby Judith when she was hit by a stray bullet. Lori then fell on top of her baby and crushed her…

The series decided this was too bleak for AMC so…

On the show, the baby is a glance of optimism in a very dark world. She’s likely what Rick was thinking about during his smiles this season. Having her around reminds Rick of Shane and Lori, but also of the future.

Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurt said they didn’t kill her off “because we don’t like to follow the comic book exactly and we felt it was very important to have that innocence and that hope. It’s a very, very bleak world. We’ve seen that as long as there’s an innocent child, a baby that they can all care for, we thought that was keeping the hope alive.”

With that in mind, everyone will do everything they can to protect Baby Judith.

Do you think Baby Judith will be the last survivor?
