Episode 10 of Season 8 started moments after Carl Grimes died. As Rick Grimes and Michonne walked in a haze around their burning community, Michonne realized that part of the community could still be saved.

As she closed the gate to stop additional walkers from coming in, she created a bottleneck at the gate to kill a few zombies. Then, as she loaded up the van with Rick, she noticed a burning gazebo nearby.

“He used to sit on the roof,” said Michonne. Neither had spoken before this moment, but she can’t help herself but try and save the burning gazebo.

As Rick Grimes and Michonne prepared to leave Alexandria, they both stumbled to pack gear and head out. Rick wasn’t sure what to do with Carl’s gun at the grave and Michonne had to stop to take in Carl and Judith’s blue handprints.

But Michonne encouraged Rick to head out when she noticed more walkers on the way. However, when she got to the van she saw the burning gazebo. “We have to go,” said Rick, but it didn’t matter.

Michonne had it in her mind that she needed to stop this fire. In a way, she was still trying to save Carl Grimes.

At this point in the story, Carl Grimes had just died and there was nothing anyone could do about that. Because of this helplessness, Michonne saw something that she could fix and she risked her life to go and fix it.

With a fire extinguisher in hand, she ran over to the burning structure. Soon, Rick came after. They used the fire extinguisher to put out the fire but also to fight off the approaching walkers (walkers are attracted to people, noise, and fire).

In the end, it was too late. Just like the death of their son, it was too late to do anything about the burning gazebo. Rick wanted to help her and she wanted to help Carl but it was too late.

Eventually, she put down the fire extinguisher and picked up her sword.
