Parents Naming Newborns After The Walking Dead And Stranger Things

Stranger Things on Netflix and The Walking Dead on AMC, are so popular that they’re wielding a significant amount of influence on baby name choices, according to new studies.

Baby Center recently released a list of the most popular baby names in 2016, and several characters from Stranger Things have moved up in the rankings.

Children with the name Dustin increased 32 percent, while Mike is also up by 28 percent. The name Joyce, based on character, Joyce Byers, has also risen by 23 percent.

Tyreese, Hershel, and Carol

On The Walking Dead, the main characters (today) haven’t had as much influence except for Carol who is up 18 percent, and Tyreese, up 48 percent, with Hershel up around 37 percent, compared to last year.

Netflix recently confirmed a second season for Stranger Things, which should release about nine episodes in 2017, but an official date has not yet been announced.

Co-creator Ross Duffer confirmed that some online fan theories for Season 2 are actually correct. “Some of these theories are elaborate and smart. They’re not crap. I love reading this stuff. We search Twitter, even though we’re not on it.”

Changing the Pop Culture

“It’s really gratifying,” said Ross’ brother Matt, who co-created the series. “Because, while you’re making it, you’re sometimes only getting feedback from two or three people. So it was insane to see it go out into the world and be experienced by that many people.”

We’re trying not to let it change our process,” confirmed Matt. “The good thing is that we have most of the story broken out before anyone started tweeting or writing about the show. Of course, a lot of what people want is already in the second season.”

The Walking Dead, on the other hand, has the graphic novel to fall back on, so many fans have an idea of what’s going to happen. But the Duffer Brothers and Stranger Things will continue to face more and more obstacles as their numbers and fans increase, if they ever reach The Walking Dead numbers.

Then again, between both shows, a lot more parents will name their newborns after show characters. Would you name your child after someone on The Walking Dead? Who would it be and why?
