The Dixon Brothers Were Originally Meaner

Back when they were originally casting the Dixon brothers, it was very likely that Daryl Dixon was going to be as hateful and pig-headed as his brother, Merle. Daryl was actually going to be racist and addicted to drugs.

Norman Reedus “fought to change” the script. “When you see him, he’s such an angry guy. He basically would’ve turned into his brother,” said Norman Reedus, about his initial interpretation of the character.

Luckily, the writers took the actor’s notes on the subject.

“But he’s found a sense of self-worth through these people that he would’ve never hung out with before. Now that group relies on him. I mean, he started out like, “Don’t look at me, don’t look at me.” He had a chip on his shoulder like he wasn’t comfortable being him.”

“There was always scripts that had him taking drugs and being racist like his brother was. I fought to change those because I felt he should be more an Al-Anon member and not a full-blown Alcoholics Anonymous member. He should have grown up with it, felt ashamed of it, and wasn’t comfortable with who he was.”

“That allows him to grow into somebody you respect.”

The other characters certainly respect Daryl Dixon and the fans would rather riot than have his character killed off. Daryl might even be more iconic for the series than Rick Grimes, the lead protagonist.

When the new season returns, Daryl Dixon appears to be gathering a herd of walkers and guiding them as a weapon. With hundreds of walkers behind him, he’s likely headed to the Sanctuary.

This October, Daryl is going to unleash a few hundred walkers on the Saviors and that’s likely only the beginning.
