The Kingdom Is Too Much For Daryl

Despite Rick’s major battle with Winslow, most of “New Best Friends” is actually centered around Daryl Dixon. Daryl is trying to wrap his head around Ezekiel, hide from Negan, fight Richard, and then make peace with Carol.

After he confronts Morgan, takes down Richard, and meets with Carol, he also befriends a tiger. After all of this work, however, Daryl once again heads off on his own—just a man and his bow.

Outside of the Kingdom, however, it’s unclear where he’ll be safe.

Finding Another Way

For actor Norman Reedus, there are several reasons to skip town. During his time within the Kingdom, nothing really went his way. In fact, despite the peaceful nature of the Kingdom, he and Carol were both threatened.

“It’s a different thing because they need the numbers,” said Reedus. “They need these people to fight Negan. But at the same time, he’s not going to let him sacrifice her for that job. You’re going to have to find another way, you know?”

Clearly, he would do anything to make sure Carol was safe, even though he’s…

Reedus added, “He’s just done. He’s going to do it himself. The thing about Daryl is, he’s loyal to one group, and it’s hard for him to stay behind and stay behind and stay behind. He’s just had enough. He’s got to figure out a way to do this where it works for everybody, but also he’s not going to take anything away from his family.”

In the end, perhaps Shiva symbolized something beyond a new best friend for Daryl. Within her cage, Shiva may have reminded Daryl that he just escaped prison, and living within the walls of the Kingdom was only a different version of those bars.

It’s unclear what’s next for Daryl, but he’s not giving up without a fight.

Do you think Daryl will make a mistake to show Negan where to find him?
