After a scene with a lot of excessive blinking from Daryl Dixon, many fans started to put together a theory involving a hidden Morse Code message.
With a show as popular as The Walking Dead, you can’t be surprised when fans analyze each frame of every episode for clues. Sometimes they really do pick up on some hidden (or not so hidden) Easter eggs. Other times, a lot of chatter and excitement builds over a whole lot of nothing.
This past week, the Internet was ablaze with theories about Daryl’s eyes. When Negan arrived at Alexandria with Daryl and the Saviors, the submissive Daryl seemed to blink excessively when facing Rick. Earlier in the episode, viewers caught a glimpse of a stylish Morse Code chart hanging in Rick’s home.
In the Blink of an Eye
Putting two and two together, some fans speculated that Daryl was actually giving Rick a message using Morse Code blinks. According to showrunner Scott Gimple, fans are seeing things that aren’t there.
“I heard about this on set yesterday,” Gimple said. “I would like to live in a world where Daryl Dixon [residually] learns Morse Code and knows that Rick has an intimate knowledge of Morse Code, as well, and that they have practiced this with blinks. I would love that.”
“I will also say that it was an incredibly sunny day,” Gimple said. “But I will say this, the fans of this show are the greatest fans that watch a television program. The stories that they tell and the things that they glean out of it are actually really thrilling. It just excites me that they have enough faith in our creativity to think we have put in some labyrinth theme kind of stuff. I would love to live in a world where that was true, but it also could have been a sunny day. Hazy, too, which makes it worse.”
If you notice his wording, Gimple doesn’t ever explicitly say that Daryl wasn’t using Morse Code. It seems pretty clear though, that he wasn’t — unless — Gimple used code to cloak his true meaning. Nonetheless, we’ll find out as the season continues.
