“My first wife was a real wife,” said Negan. In “The Big Scary U,” audiences finally get to catch up with Negan and Father Gabriel. After Rick’s attack, both men got stuck in a trailer surrounded by walkers.

“My only real wife. Till death did us part,” said Negan, in response to Father Gabriel’s confession. In this episode, we get to hear the villain’s backstory and part of the reasoning for why Father Gabriel saved Gregory in the premiere.

“It was before this,” he went on.

Through the door, Negan began to give his confession. Father Gabriel is hidden like a priest in a confessional. In reality, he was scared that he might be killed with a bat. “I lied to her. I screwed around on her,” he said.

“She was sick and when she went, it was during this,” he went on. “I couldn’t put her down. That is how I was weak. That is what I will confess. Because, yeah, maybe we do bite the big one here.”

Father Gabriel walked out and said, “You are forgiven.” Then, Gabriel got punched in the nose.

The rest of the story comes from Robert Kirkman’s comic series, Here’s Negan. In the comic, we hear a little more about his backstory and how he became the iconic Saviors’ leader.

In this episode, we’re given a few more clues from the comic. Negan tells Father Gabriel that he worked with children. He was a gym teacher before the outbreak and loved to challenge the kids. Now, he does the same thing with the Saviors, who are all childish and dangerous.

What he doesn’t tell us, however, is that his wife was also named Lucille. She had cancer and he spent a few months in the hospital watching her die. After cheating on her, this dwelled on him.

Once she died, he was no longer the same man. Now, everything he does is for the sake of his deceased wife.

Do you think Negan and Rick Grimes were in the same hospital during the outbreak?
