The Walking Dead’s “Rock in the Road” premiere opened with Father Gabriel watching over his flock. In what appeared to be a panic attack, Gabriel decided to drop his bible, steal all of the food and knives from Alexandria, and leave.

At this moment, most fans were probably reminded of Father Gabriel’s cowardice when he revealed his backstory to Rick Grimes. In order to save himself, he decided to lock himself up in the church and left everyone else to die outside.

But once he got in the car, it was clear there was more to the story.

At the end of the episode, Rick found a note that said “boat” in the inventory book. Aaron and Rick didn’t tell anyone where they found the supplies, so they didn’t understand how Father Gabriel learned about the boat.

In the final moments, Rick Grimes’ crew was surrounded by a new group but it wasn’t clear why Gabriel had led them to this trap. Rick’s smile indicated that he had found his troops, but there’s still more to the story.

There was someone with Father Gabriel in that car…wait for it.

Last season, the person who had followed Rick and Aaron was spying on Father Gabriel while he was on night watch. Apparently, this person got the drop on Father Gabriel and made him steal the supplies.

During the chaos, someone took the time to write “boat” in the inventory list. Either the mystery person in boots wrote this note or they mentioned the boat to Gabriel and he made the brave decision to leave this note for Rick.

Either way, all of these pieces should add up when the show returns.

Did you catch this silhouette pop-up in the passenger seat with Father Gabriel?
