The potential death of Carl Grimes is devastating to fans of The Walking Dead. However, if you rewatch the episode, with the knowledge that it will end with a walker bite, there’s so much more to see. Carl Grimes knew he was on the way out.

While Negan spoke on the microphone outside of Alexandria, Rick’s son, Carl Grimes, answered the door. “He’s not home,” said Carl. Negan was surprised to see Carl, but likely also thankful, since Carl is someone he respects.

But Carl’s words during this chat hit Negan to his core.

“Hold your fire, it’s Carl. Look at you. Answering the door like a big boy,” said Negan. Carl Grimes began the conversation telling Negan about the kids and families inside. Mainly, he was just trying to buy some time so everyone could escape.

Carl tried to hit Negan by telling him that Judith was still inside. Before, we watched as Negan visited Alexandria and actually held Judith. “That sh*t just breaks my heart,” said Negan with zero remorse.

Then, Carl Grimes played his cards in a way to truly mess with Negan.

Negan came back at Carl by bringing up the death of Lori Grimes. “Bad stuff does happen, but we can figure this out,” concluded Carl. “We can stop this.” As Negan went off on how he’s the one true leader of the new world, Carl cut him off.

“Kill me,” said Carl Grimes. “If you have to kill someone, if there has to be punishment, then kill me. I’m serious,” he added. When asked if he wanted to die, Carl said, “No, I don’t. But I will. It’s going to happen.”

What Negan doesn’t know is that this is Carl’s way of telling him that he is dying. Underneath his shirt, there is a walker bite that is working its way into his bloodstream. Since his shirt is clear, we believe this bite happened a day earlier while he was rescuing Saddiq.

“If me dying can stop this, if it can make things different, for us, for you, for all those other kids, it would be worth it,” said Carl Grimes. As if that’s enough, he sunk his teeth into Negan and asked, “Was this the plan? Was it supposed to be this way?”

Negan can’t handle Carl Grimes and his sacrifice because he doesn’t know the truth.

Did you have any idea that Carl Grimes had been bitten while helping Saddiq?
