From The Well To The Rock
The King made his debut in Season 7’s “The Well,” but he’s just now met with Rick Grimes in “Rock in the Road.” Carol and Morgan spoke with the King and showed us what the Kingdom was all about in The Walking Dead 7A.
Richard spoke with these two about trying to convince the King to prepare for war against Negan and the Saviors. Now, Rick has officially brought everything to the surface when he asked for an audience with the King.
King Ezekiel, reluctant to protect his people, told Rick he wouldn’t help him.
Khary Payton Discusses The King’s Logic
USA Today spoke with actor Khary Payton and asked him why he thought the King turned down Rick’s offer to partner in battle. “I don’t know this dude! I realize (the viewers) know Rick, but Ezekiel doesn’t,” replied the actor.
For Payton, he thought the King felt something like, “I’ve been running my game over here and I haven’t gotten anybody killed, so maybe you need to rethink how you work your stuff.”
All in all, he feels the King is simply reluctant.
King Ezekiel, The Keeper Of The Peace
Outside of his initial response, however, the King did reveal a little more about himself during the bedtime story. When Benjamin approached, the King was reciting Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech.
Perhaps, in this regard, he will be the peacekeeper amidst the future battles. Richard will likely gather a few more troops to fight with Rick Grimes, Alexandria and Hilltop, while the Kingdom can continue to hope for peace and prepare for battle.
The King has already taken in Daryl and Carol. Both of these people were strangers to the King and they even insulted him during introductions. That said, he still accepted them in his community. “He can see their pain,” confirmed Payton.
Do you think Negan will do something that makes the King change his mind?
