“Leaving Walking Dead wasn’t my decision. It was all story-related. It made sense story-wise for it to happen for Rick and Michonne and all the other characters,” said actor Chandler Riggs to the Hollywood Reporter.

Chandler Riggs has essentially grown up on The Walking Dead. Starring as Carl Grimes, Riggs has been on the series since the very beginning. He signed on at age 11 and now exiting the series at age 18.

There was talking Riggs leaving the show for school, but the decision wasn’t his to make in this scenario.

“[Showrunner Scott Gimple] was trying to figure out why there was a hole between Rick slitting Negan’s throat at the end of the “All-Out War” arc; and then there’s the time jump and Negan is alive and in prison and Rick didn’t kill Negan,” said Riggs.

The actor concluded that the showrunner wanted to bridge the gap between the two very different sides of Rick Grimes. In order for Rick to change his mind about killing Negan, something drastic had to happen.

We see this when Carl Grimes and Rick talk in the beginning of the episode about “hope” versus action.

“It was devastating for me and my family because the show has been such a huge part of my life for so long,” said Chandler Riggs. “For a few days, we didn’t know what to do. “I decided that I wanted to not go to college for at least a year and move to L.A. and focus on acting and music.”

While Chandler Riggs focuses on a music career, the rest of us are left to wonder what’s next. Since Carl Grimes is still alive and well in the comic books, this is perhaps the most drastic change we’ve seen to date.

Likewise, Chandler Riggs never thought Carl Grimes was going to be killed off. Actors like Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon) and Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) thought Carl had a good chance of being the last man standing.

“Although Carl’s story is coming to an end, it’s not over yet,” said Chandler Riggs, in regards to the second half of Season 8 on The Walking Dead.

Did you ever expect to see Carl Grimes die on the iconic series?
