Since Stephen Hawking’s passing last week, we’ve learned so much about the man who studied the origin of the universe. Bill Prady, Simon Helberg, and others have shared their memories of the genius’ time on the Big Bang Theory set.
Stephen Hawking On The Big Bang Theory Set
As we near Pi day (3.14) I join the global community in mourning the loss of the greatest physicist of our era. #StephenHawking is free from the physical constraints of this earthly condition we all exist in and he is soaring above us now marveling at it all. Thank you Dr. Hawking for enlightening us and blessing us with your wisdom and courage.
Stephen Hawking appeared on The Hawking Excitation. The Big Bang Theory episode chronicles the scientist coming to Cal Tech. He’s put under Howard’s care, who becomes the envy of Sheldon. Sheldon so desperately wants to meet Hawking that he becomes Howard’s slave for the day, even going so far as to take care of Mrs. Wolowitz. It’s a great episode. The cast and crew all say their time with Hawking changed them forever.
It was truly such an honor getting to work with the incredible Stephen Hawking.. He made us laugh and we made him laugh. His life and career workings have been many a subject matter on @thebigbangtheory__ and we are all better for it. You will be missed but the world is grateful for the knowledge and courage you leave in your path. Thank you for being an inspiration to everyone 🙏🏼 #stephenhawking ♥️
Upon the scientist’s passing, Mayim Bialik wrote, “Thank you Dr. Hawking for enlightening us and blessing us with your wisdom and courage.” Kaley Cuoco added, “It was truly such an honor getting to work with the incredible Stephen Hawking.. He made us laugh and we made him laugh.”
Bill Prady, co-creator of the show, admitted he has never been more excited for a guest star. He wrote in a recent Variety article, “no amount of Batmen or Vulcans or real-life astronauts is adequate preparation for Stephen Hawking, who died March 14 at 76. There’s nothing remotely on par with walking into a library at Caltech and meeting the man a “Big Bang” writer much funnier than me called “the wheelchair dude who invented time.”
Stephen Hawking’s Big Entrance
Bill chronicled his memories of sharing jokes and meals with Hawking in his powerful essay. He stated, “Hawking was imprisoned in his body by the ravages of a cruel disease; I’ve spent my life trapped by crippling shyness. The only way I’ve found out of my confinement is jokes. And I told one to Stephen Hawking.”
Simon Helberg also revealed a few details from Stephen Hawking’s time on The Big Bang Theory set. He said the scientist rolled in like a rock star, appearing larger than life. “It was just so surreal. They opened the giant stage doors and he was like silhouetted from behind… It was a man in a wheelchair with all these cool British guys behind him.”
We are thankful for Stephen Hawking’s contributions to both science and The Big Bang Theory. Was The Hawking Excitation one of your favorite The Big Bang Theory episodes?
