It’s been 28 years since Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey starred in the famous tearjerker, Beaches. But what about the actresses that played their younger versions? Mayim Bialik and Marcie Leeds portrayed the duo when they first met at the age of 11. And now the two decided to take a trip down memory lane.
In a new clip made for Bialik’s YouTube channel, they reenacted the film’s memorable opening moments. “I am none other than the fantastic, world-famous child wonder, C.C. Bloom,” Bialik deadpans in the video. “Ta-da.”

This little clip is more like a mini reunion for Bialik and Leeds. The two hadn’t seen each other in decades. Not long after “Beaches,” Leeds left the acting world for a more traditional life.
“After ‘Beaches,’ I did an episode of ‘Parenthood’ with Leonardo DiCaprio,” Leeds explained in an interview with Bialik for Grok Nation. “That was the first time I had kissed anyone and it was actually really heavy and weird for me, so I decided that having to deal with stuff like that was not what I wanted to do.”
Leeds went on to a career in the medical community. She’s now a surgeon in Arizona with an impressive history. She actually attended to the victims of the 2011 Tucson shooting, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Of course, we all know what Mayim Balik went on to do. But here’s a little recap for those who may not know.
After Beaches, Balik went on to star in her own television show, Blossom. Once Blossom wrapped, Bialik pursued a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. Although she had been accepted at both Harvard and Yale, she completed the degree at UCLA in 2007.
Bialik returned to acting in 2009 when she landed the role on the third season of The Big Bang Theory as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler. Ironically, Amy is a neurobiologist. Her performance as Amy earned her Emmy Award nominations in 2012 and 2015 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
In 2012, Bailik brought back the beloved 90s character, Blossom Russo, in an Old Navy commercial. Also present was her former co-star, Joseph Lawrence. In 2014, she became the guest host on the TV Land edition of the reality show “Candid Camera.”
I’m happy to see that Bialik and Leeds can look on at their parts in Beaches and have fond memories. It was also really sweet that the two got to see each other again after so many years apart. Maybe on day Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey can join in the fun too.
