The Big Bang Theory has grown near and dear to many of our hearts as fans of the series.  There are some recurring images, icons, and situations in the series that have become essential to the story of The Big Bang Theory.  Some include Sheldon’s spot, Raj’s inability to talk to women, and, most importantly, Soft Kitty.

The Song

“Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur!  Happy kitty, sleepy kitty. Purr, purr, purr.”

Now if you are a true Big Bang fan, you sang that in your head as you read it.  Throughout the series, Penny and Sheldon develop a special relationship and this song is part of that.  When Sheldon was little, his mother would sing the song to him when he was sick.  Now, it has turned into Penny’s favorite remedy whenever there is something wrong with Sheldon.

We occasionally find the song used in a comical way such as when the two sing it in rounds, while at other times the song is used to bring the characters together in a time of need.  Either way, Soft kitty is one aspect of The Big Bang Theory that resides in the heart of every fan.

Outside the Show

The tune used for Soft Kitty in The Big Bang Theory was originally featured in a Polish lullaby from the 19th century.  The original song did feature a kitten, however, it’s about a kitten on a fence.

The song’s words come from a children’s song called “Warm Kitty,” though the words are somewhat mixed up compared to the original.  Recently there has been a lawsuit by the original makers of the song over its use and merchandising for The Big Bang Theory.

The song is introduced to the show in the middle of season one with the episode “The Pancake Batter Anomaly.”  We find that Sheldon is sick and is abandoned by his friends and left to Penny’s care.  Here is where Sheldon originally teaches the song to Penny, but it would certainly not be the last time we see it.

In addition, the song makes appearances in:
