Simon Helberg owes his international fame to The Big Bang Theory. This may seem like a mean statement. But I think it to be true. I didn’t know who the guy was before the Big Bang Theory. Wild to think he almost passed it up, huh?

But when he swung by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 35-year-old revealed he had nearly bypassed the CBS smash. He explained he’d been reluctant to take the part of Howard Wolowitz because he was tired of being typecast.

At the time, he had been playing a supporting role on the Aaron Sorkin show Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. ‘But,’ Hedberg conceded, ‘people weren’t watching it, and I hear that’s part of the equation.’

When The Big Bang Theory came up, however, the Los Angeles native thought: ‘I don’t wanna play nerds anymore.’

He joked that his reasoning was: ‘Pretty soon I’ll be a distinguished grey, and that’s pretty hot. So I’ll pass on the nerd show. Don’t worry, Simon. I think you’re already hot.

Luckily, he was convinced to audition and give it a shot. I’m glad. I don’t think anyone else can capture Howard Wollowitz so perfectly.

Florence Foster Jenkins

At the time of Simon’s Late Show appearance, he was there to promote another project: Florence Foster Jenkins. Stephen Frears’ biographic film stars Meryl Streep as the titular amateur soprano. The sitcom star plays Jenkins’ accompanist, who quickly discovers how limited her talent is.

Helberg told Colbert he had, in fact, amassed a bit of piano-playing experience as a teenager, when his father would drop him off at gigs on the Sunset Strip.

‘Yeah, I got good,’ he said. ‘Cause I wasn’t handsome enough to be bad. I was in a band with a bunch of handsome people who could be bad. You know, they just play a chord and take their shirt off.’

Unfortunately, despite his history, Helberg did not have the necessary level of ability when he signed on to do the movie.

‘No, I lied,’ he said sheepishly. ‘I lied to a great director, Stephen Frears.’ ‘

That’s what actors are,’ the 52-year-old interjected, ‘professional liars.’

‘Yeah, and he bought it,’ said Helberg. ‘Yeah, I said, “Oh, I can play anything, you know, you put in front of me.” And he just – he fell for it. So lying is kinda the key to success.’ Way to be a good role model there, Simon.

Conclusion

So, what do you guys think of that? We almost didn’t have Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz. Are you glad he went to the audition?

Can you see anyone else playing Wolowitz? If so, who would you have cast? Let us know in the comments below.

Have you seen Helberg’s movie Florence Foster Jenkins? Was it good? Have you seen anything else Helberg has been in? I would love to know. Leave me a comment.

Oh, and does anyone else find him attractive? Is it just me? It can’t just be me.
